The Unexpected

I had a surprise today and not a pleasant one.  I learned that someone I know, who also suffers from ulcerative colitis started on the Paleo diet last week after a conversation I had with her, and now she’s experiencing a bad flare up.  I feel terrible knowing that the food choices that seem to be working for me, set off a flare up for her. I knew the risk I took when I started the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, going against the food recommendations of my gastroenterologist.  I read so many stories of people who reported to feel better on the AIP diet that I was willing to take the chance.  I was reminded by a blog post by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne that the AIP diet is not a cure, one could still experience flares while on it, but hopefully the diet along with lifestyle changes would heal the gut.  I continue on this path, but I am still baffled sometimes by how some people can eat unhealthy food and not get ill while others can eat healthy and still get ill.  Our bodies are still a mystery to us.  I am grateful mine is still functioning as well as it is.

Today is Day 8 of the Write 31 Days series.  You can find my other posts in the series here.
